Running your PTA
The Class Rep is a smaller volunteering role that isn’ t as much of a commitment as an elected committee member. For some, it takes as little as an hour or two per week! As they are not on the committee, Class Reps don’ t hold voting rights or make decisions on PTA activities, but many Class Reps become more involved and even join the committee later. At the core of this role is strong communication – whether that’ s sharing PTA events with parents, raising funding requests for specific classes with the PTA or helping bring new volunteers and supporters in to help.
What are the responsibilities?

Modern day PTA:

• Sharing information between the PTA and their school class / year group – whether in person or using social media
• Gathering feedback and insight from their class / year group to support PTA activities
• Engaging parents with the PTA’ s events, activities and mission
• Promoting PTA events and encouraging involvement
• Encouraging new volunteers to join the association
• Organising social events for parents in their group, such as informal coffee mornings

Class reps

Alongside Chairs, Treasurers and Secretaries, modern day PTAs often have other specialist roles that help to make their committee a success. In this issue, we’ re taking a look at how Class Reps work alongside the committee to bring their community closer together
What skills are required?
• Great people skills
• Strong communication and a good listener
• Good IT and social media skills
• Well-organised and punctual
What’ s the main purpose of the role?
It’ s so important for schools, PTAs and parents to communicate and connect effectively. That’ s where Class Representatives come in: their primary role is to share information from the PTA committee with the parents in their child’ s class or year group. They may also act as a collective voice for pupils, parents and sometimes even teachers,
bringing specific funding requests or ideas to the PTA’ s attention. They are a friendly face and a PTA contact that parents can rely on – especially in larger schools, where it’ s unlikely that the committee will get to know most parents individually. A great Class Rep will help parents feel connected to the PTA, all while helping the PTA understand the wants and needs of specific class groups.
