Running your PTA
Ask Clare advice & support
When running a PTA, you’ re bound to encounter challenges – and that’ s where we can help. At Parentkind, we have a dedicated team of advisers, headed up by our PTA Community Manager, Clare. With 25 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge to share, she offers her straight-talking advice on your issues
Do you need to be a registered charity to apply for grants?
Can the school use our charity number to apply for a grant, then have us pass the funds straight to them?
No, they absolutely should not. The PTA and the school are separate legal entities, with the Trustees of the PTA being responsible for ensuring the terms of the grant funding are met. If a grant is awarded to the PTA, the funds must be used in line with the PTA’ s charitable objectives, not simply passed on. It’ s important to maintain clear boundaries to avoid legal and financial complications.
Not always! Many grants are open to PTAs not registered as charities – the application criteria should let you know if you’ re eligible. However, being a registered charity opens doors to more funding opportunities and gives your PTA added credibility. Don’ t forget, if your annual income exceeds £ 5,000, you should be registered already.
